Elements of design

Line
The linear marks made with a pen or the edge created when two shapes meet.

Shape
A self contained defined area of geometric or organic form

Direction
Horizontal, Vertical, or Oblique

Size
The relationship of the area occupied by one shape to that of another.

Texture
the surface quality of a shape

Color
Also called hue

Value
the lightness or darkness of a color

Balance
Similar to balance in physics

Gradation
of size and direction produce linear perspective

Repetition
with variation is interesting, without variation repetition can be monotonous

Contrast
the juxtaposition of opposing elements

Harmony
The visually satisfying effect of combining similar, related elements

Dominance
gives a painting interest, counteracting confusion and monotony

Unity
the visual linking of various elements of the work
